I asked my Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter friends what was the #1 challenge in getting folks to visit our churches. Here are the answers. NOTE:  I have had to change/edit some personal info and a few verb tenses here and there. I added the layman/pastor category to bring some clarity as well.

So far here are the #1 challenges in getting new folks to visit our churches:
• bad location
• bad perception of the church
• lack of community involvement
• church members don’t or won’t visit folks and invite
• negative perception of some people in the church
• the pastor does not lead by being involved and inviting

Here are some more….

Sacred cows… Slaughter the sacred cows.

I think the tv “evangelists” and churches have done what the Bible says and tickle the ears of people so who needs to go anywhere…Heck I can even TiVo it and watch after my hangover wears off…I find most tv churches hypocritical and very fake….

-Layman

Lack of genuine interest.

-Pastor

Job schedules or weather affect us quite a bit.

-Layman

The bottom line is people do just exactly what they want to do… They either come to church or they don’t…

-Pastor

Over promise and under deliver.

-Pastor

In our area, Catholicism is a big problem.

-Laymen

No interest in visiting a church.

-Pastor

It used to be the poor negative perception of XYZ. I think we’ve got that turned around now. We have guests practically every week. Most of the time we have multiple guests. PTL!

People are just busy…always going here or there and doing this or that!!!

-Pastor

I think the biggest reason is: we just don’t go and invite. Or, we don’t invite while we’re going. There are a lot of misconceptions out there but they can be overcome. We just have to try. Also don’t get discouraged when those we invite don’t come.

-Pastor

Our biggest challenge was a Negative feeling towards the church because of past persons out visiting that offended folks by their method of “inviting” people. We have overcome that by building a trust relationship with the community.

-Pastor

Getting people out to invite them!

-Pastor

The lack of attempted outreach by current members.

-Layman

I didn’t want to invite other kids to our church as a young teen because I didn’t want them embarrassed by preaching that targeted women in pants or called Mormons “morons”, etc.

-Layman

Answer to your challenge… Not having a pastor that even will go out and get people in. Having a visitation or canvassing program. No vbs. He always says it is our job to get people to come… We have to have a shepherd to lead not just preach!

-Layman

Our pastor is your typical 70s and 80s Independent Baptist Preacher.  He comes across as a Baptist who was mad about it. He can be a very angry man from the pulpit sometimes.  He has a tendency to make fun of other churches from the pulpit, so no one really wants to bring their unsaved friends or family for fear of them being made fun of.  Our church is perceived to be a cult.  We just keep to ourselves and really don’t get too involved in the community.

-Layman

I think many of our people are older and we seem to be missing a generation.  Many of the younger people moved away to serve The Lord in other places, and we had a church split about 16 years ago, and lost some people.  The faithful remainder is getting old.  Some are “weary in well-doing”.

-Pastor

I believe that most worship the gods of entertainment and pleasure and that keeps them from church. I also believe that people avoid church like criminals avoid the police station. They don’t want to be uncomfortable when the Bible speaks to their sin or lifestyle. This is my opinion why people don’t want to go to church.
